Charging System on the Fritz - New Wiring Subharness?
Charging System on the Fritz - New Wiring Subharness?
Hey guys. Long story short, last year I rescued an '85 Trans Am and have had continuing problems with the charging system. At this point, I've replaced the battery, the alternator (twice), and even butt spliced in a replacement electrical connector on top of the alternator (which had some corroded wiring), but still, the problem persists. It's strange, too. I'll start the car, and the multimeter reading at the battery will show anywhere from 13.5 to 14.5 volts while idling, but as soon as I rev the engine, it drops down to 12.5 volts and does not give me any more voltage unless my foot is on the pedal. I put the second alternator in yesterday and don't know what else to do. I think the next step is to put in a new wiring subharness between the battery and the alternator. Does anyone know where I can buy that? I've been searching around on the web, but no luck.

Does you engine have underdrive pulleys?
If yes, that causes that problem.
However as long as it is charging when you’re on the loud pedal, you don’t have a problem.
