Worth buying a new headlight control module?

GM 16525685 - Headlight control module, 1990-2002

It lists for $183.87 from gmpartsdirect.com

Mine has been kinda going out the past couple years. Now it's totally out, only one light comes up even after messing with it.

I have no problem at all spending the money for a brand new one. My hopes are that the new ones are much better made than the originals.

Can any say if they have ever had the new replacement module give them issues? I'd like it to last longer than the original did for sure. Who is the OEM? ACDELCO, Bosch, Denso?

Also it looks like no one makes an aftermarket version, IE CarQuest, etc.

Re: Worth buying a new headlight control module?

Based on your description of the symptoms, it is not the module that is going bad, but the bushings inside the headlight motors. I am assuming that the motor still spins when you press the headlight switch, yet the motor is acting erratic and sometimes raises or lowers and sometimes does not. If it were the module, there would be no spinning of the motor at all. The module either energizes the motor or is silent. There is no in-between.

Here is a link to my deluxe kit which repairs two headlight motors:

Re: Worth buying a new headlight control module?

Wrong, never "assume" Lon :P

You actually replaced the bushings in my motors when you did my door hinges for me a few years ago.

I ended up removing the module off the firewall, cleaning it inside with contact cleaner and the contacts in the plugs, works like a charm for now but I'm sure I will still need a new one at some point. I have been getting by last couple of years tapping the module with a screw driver lol.

BTW, about 6 months after doing the door hinges, the bottom hinge on the drivers door broke. The car has been sleeping in my garage and I'm just now getting it back on the road so I'll be in touch about driving down for you to replace it again.

P.S. Remember we couldn't figure out why my rear hatch motor wouldn't work right even after a different mechanism and switch? Still doesn't, still baffles me lol.

Thanks!

Alex

OK. No problem. I have plenty of the modules in stock if you decide to go that route.
