Center Brake Light works - Tail Brake Lights don't?

Just bought my 88 Trans AM GTA convertible, got the plates today, before going to inspection station I tested lights and the Center Brake Light works and all the Tail Brake Lights don't? Pulled taillight assemblies, bulbs and wiring all look good. Only one fuse is designated "Stop Light" #17, and thats good. BTW car has only 10,800 miles spent most of it's life in storage. Any ideas before I tear the interior apart tracing wires?

Thanks,
Bob

Re: Center Brake Light works - Tail Brake Lights don't?

I'd be looking at the turn signal switch and its wiring.

The plug is a long flat thing on top of the steering column. Unplug and re-plug that and see if that helps.

Next step would be the turn signal switch itself; taking GREAT CARE not to destroy the horn connector thing in the process.

I SURE AS HELL wouldn't consider "tear the interior apart tracing wires" to be the first step in tracking it down. That's how cars turn into electrically dysfunctional POSs. Use a schematic and some logic instead.

Is that under the dash or in the Engine compartment?

I unplugged and reseated that connector on the Steering column and it worked.

Thanks for the advice!
