I have a 87 iroc with what appears to be a cut wire behind the rear license plate holder. What is that wire for? Everything works and the license plate lights are on the side of the tail lights? The wires come out of a grommet behind the license plate near the key hole for the rear glass/hatch.

 

Maybe the PO had a backup camera? Aftermarket license plate lights? A picture would help us out. Especially cause I think there wasn't a wire there stock to begin with.

 

 

Shortly after buying the car, I went thought and was sorting out a few items to find the reminants of an old security system. Just a thought but maybe it was for that? Doesn't look stock. I guess I could start by tracing the wires back. Ill update tonight after chasing the wires a bit. I was just curious if anyone else's car had this.

 

Doesn't look factory to me. I suppose it could have been part of a security system, but a rear facing camera would make more sense to me.

Your best bet would be to trace the wires like you said though.

Lol, true. I even wanted to do that to my car and completely forgot to mention that as a possibility

 

While this sounds great , I'll bet the real reason was one of those LED lit plate frames , and He'll find those 2 wires being powered by the taillight wire and ground .
