Coil Problem?

1984 5.0---- 700R4 tranny---- Car runs like crap. I replaced the Coil and Cap with GM Delco parts and car ran good for 20 minutes- After a 2 hour rest- I started up the car and it ran like crap all the way home- at 5 mph 10 mile trip. Have noticed that the internal coill wires Red and Yellow are showing either wear or splitting of insulation "possible from the heat?" This is a Brand New Coil-----Could these breaks in the Red yellow wires be causing a grounding or mis firing problem???? And what is causing them to lose their insulation? They are brand new....

Re: Coil Problem?

is there possibly rubbing against it that could have rubbed the insulation off? If not i would take it back.

Re: Coil Problem?

You burnt the new coil, the spark is jumping too far somewhere. Most likely a secondary wire or a spark plug.

Thanks- but I am not sure I understand.
Examination of the new coil shows no wear or burn marks on face or base where it comes in contact with rotor. Clean looking and brand new. Only signs that show is the wear on edge of the insulation of the 2 wires leading out of the coil pack to the side for the battery and tach clips.

Could it be a bad condenser?? thanks

Re: Coil Problem?

If the coil overheats because it's working too hard. Your spark is not jumping on the "button", it's more likely somewhere downstream.

Re: Coil Problem?

one thing that I just learned in school is that it is possible that your coil could over heat and arc inside the coil. I would do a resistance test on your coil and see what you get.

Thanks Guys-- but upon visual inspection of the coil- there is no signs of burning or arcing-- the bottom and top sides still look brand new.
