stock '86 tach not working

Engine: 5.0 Tune port
Transmission: 700R4
Axle/Gears: Stock? 2.73
stock '86 tach not working
i have a stock 86 iroc and the tach is not working, when i disconnect the battery it goes all the way back to zero but when i start the car it gradually it works its way back to 7k range, from what i have read these Tachs are quite problematic but what would be involved with correcting this problem?
