SOLVED! 91 RS starts without security code.
I have a 91 RS V6 that has the GM security system with the VATS key chip and keypad to enter a security code required to start the car. All of a sudden the car starts with or without the code, with the valet switch in either position. I've tried entering random codes, no code at all, and of course the correct code (453 if it matters) and the car starts right up just the same no matter what. I really like the security system as i'm a delivery driver so its nice to not have to worry about my car rolling away if i leave the keys in it when i go to grab an order. Any idea what might have caused it to stop working or how to fix it? With all the threads about people with immobilized cars because of trouble with this system and the high price of replacing it all together i'm hesitant to start poking around at it myself without knowing much about it. I've tried google and searching the forums and all i can find are threads where peoples cars WONT start rather than cars that are over exuberant. Any help or ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time guys.

Re: 91 RS starts without security code.
VATS is only the chip on the key. Whatever you have that you enter a code into is an aftermarket addition. You'll need to find out what company makes it and try to get an installation instructions for it or a manual. Maybe you can open it and find a manufacturer's info inside.
It may help for someone to identify it if you post pictures of it.

Thanks, I know it's a GM system but maybe it wasnt factory installed. I know this isnt a problem with the VATS system its self but i thought they were related/part of the same security system. I was able to find out from some paperwork the previous owner gave me that the keypad system is called the "GM Goodwrench Vehicle Security System, System VSS-100" Anyone know if this was a factory option or anything about the system? Now that I know it wasnt standard on the car I'll try my hand on google again and see if i can find a page on this system in particular. Thanks for the info and brain spike.
Edit: there is very little information on the system online. It was dealer sold/installed, its very complicated, and the wiring diagram on my manual is almost totally warn off. Apparently at the time it was top end and very high tech. Some even had sensors on the doors hood and trunk, a shock sensor, a blaring loud alarm and system on the battery to prevent bypassing it by just disconnecting power. Mine is just the keypad (so far as i know)

Re: 91 RS starts without security code.
SOLVED! Well, fixed at least. I unplugged the connector for the keypad from the main unit (the "computer" that connects everything and controls the system) and and finally it wouldn't start! It was a weird feeling to turn the key, hear nothing but a click and be pleased by that . Next I plugged the keypad back in and it was suddenly all back to normal. Why did that fix it? I have no idea. Will that work for you? I have no idea... but its worth a try. It's safe to say im sorry you found this thread. I wish I could be more helpful.
The good news is third gens aren't the most stolen car in the country anymore like they were in the 80's so you can probably get away without it unless you're as lazy as i am and cant be bothered to take your keys with you every time.

OK, now I'm confused. What do you mean " i cant be bothered to take my keys with me every time?? Isn't this security pad just an additional hurdle to cross to start the car? Are you saying that it allows you to start the car without a key?
