New to the board and need some help bought a car with the key switch knocked out there was no key the car suposily ran before I don't know I put a new column in with a key still wouldn't start security light stays on so I took a volt meter and got 11.85 ohms from the key got some resistors and got it to 11.87 wired it up via a video from YouTube and nothing hot wired the starter it would crank and start with some starter fluid and the fuel pump kicks on and I pit a new battery on it I need some help thanks.

 

does the security light still stay on, if so you mat have gotten the wrong key ... if this is the case, you may need to get the list of ohms from all the keys of that year and try them all ... just remember that if you try the wrong one it will not start, even with the right one, for 4 minutes (if i remember right)

 

It still stays on and would the wrong key still turn the key switch all the way to the start position

 

i am guessing the key you have came with the column you put into it ... if that is the case, the key is not matched to the v.a.t.s. module in the car you have now, but to the one you got the column out of ... so yes, good chance the key will turn to start, but not give the right resistance the module is looking for

 

So what do I need go do then since it's not matched

 

either have vats tuned out of the chip, or find the list of resistances of each key made that year (it is on here somewhere) and try one every 4 to 5 minutes till you get the right one ( if i remember right, there were 15 keys)

you tried all of them, and gave it the 4 minutes after each one ... if so and the light is still on, make sure you are hooking the resistors to the wires that go up under the dash, and not the ones that go back into the column ( if i remember right, the wires are orange and white) ... make sure the vats module is plugged in ... if all that is correct and it still is not working, then you may have a bad vats module and you may want to think about getting it tuned out of the computer ... or if you can get the vats module out of the car you got the key from

 

Probably gonna try and get the vats module out of the other car do you know where it's located at

Find this resistor and these 2 wires under the dash. And do what I did!! Problem solved!! Been working for 2 years. 90 firebird formula. White wire with black stripe and purple wire with white stripe. Cant remember what size resistor though....sorry! Hope this helps.
