tachometer pegged at 7k 24/7

I just bought a 1990 camaro RS 305 5 spd w t tops. its a beautiful car. I come from the world of hondas so working on chevy's is a little new to me. I'm fairly good with electrical work, and i've been doing some reading. I read the sticky but they are addressing the tach reading being off by a multiple or a divisor. My tach doesn't work at all. it sits pegged at 7k on or off, all day all night. What do I need to get started to fix this? I have a multimeter. and also, maybe an instructional on how to remove the gauge cluster? Thanks!

Also, the PO said that occasionally after sitting all night, the tach would be at zero when he went to start it in the morning, and the needle would slowly make it's way to the peg at 7k and sit there again.

Prolly has a piece of trash (metal chip) stuck in the meter movement air gap, captured by the magnetic field.

See my signature for a helpful guide.

From my days long gone of repairing analog meter movements, a sewing needle is THE PERFECT TOOL for removing such things, along with one of these.

Mine did the same thing recently when the battery died.

I just unhooked the battery overnight and reconnected it in the morning and it started working again. Dumb luck probably but might want to give it a try.

Re: tachometer pegged at 7k 24/7

I've since resolved the issue by simply wiring up a 6k tach and mounting it to the dash. 50 bucks shipped from ebay, its Autometer autogage and it is EXCELLENT! Anybody interested in this I will provide the details below. It's very responsive (unlike cheap chinese brands), accurate, and there is plenty of wiring on the stock harness to reach the locations you need to tap into. The hardest part was tapping into the coil for the signal wire, simply due to how short the exposed wire was (made it very difficult to strip the wire to splice into due to the weird position you have to hold the wire cutters and how little room for error there is, but just take your time).

Autometer Autogage 2306. Retails on autometers website for like 80 bucks, went straight to ebay found the exact same one, brand new in the box, for 50.
