86 trans am t5 reverse lights and neutral safety
one of the many small things that needs fixed on my trans am is the fact that the reverse lights dont work. When i first got the car it would turn over just fine. then as we started to plug everything up under the dash after swapping some components out it seemed you had to play with the clutch pedal a little to get it to turn over. this eventually ended up not starting at all. So i browsed the internet for a little and found out about the plug under the center console that has the neutral safety switch and reverse lights in it. So i got a jumper wire and jumped the neutral safety wires and it starts up all the time, the reverse lights light up if i jump those wires. So my question is that does this plug plug into. the transmission had the shifter swapped out for a short shifter and im almost certain this car is originally a t5

The reverse light switch is in the driver's side of the transmission case. The plug that goes into it has a blue and a green wire.

I know where the reverse switch is at on the transmission, my question is what plugs into the harness under the center console to complete the circuit for the reverse and neutral safety switch, thanks for the response though

That wiring is not in the center console in a stick car. So the answer to that would be, nothing.
The plug that goes into the transmission has a blue and a green wire. Find such a plug and plug it in. If your harness doesn't have it (comes out of the engine harness near the distributor) then you can make some kind of an extension for the wires you DO have and route them to the trans .... somehow.

Ok I'll have to try and trace it tomorrow, so is the wiring the same for a stick and auto car since mine has the plug under the center console, if so I guess that would be explain why the car would start without that being plugged in

Sorry, I guess I'm stupid, I thought you were asking what the reverse light wires plug into. Which I agree is pretty hard to believe, is the reverse light switch.

Firebird does NOT = Camaro. Unlike the Camaros; the Firebird dash harnesses in 86 is factory wired for both automatic and stick cars. (FYI: many/most pre-88 stick cars have the reverse light wiring located in the ECM harness C207 or C221 connector. )

Yea the nss is the rod style, good to know that they were wired for both so I'm not continuing to look at where this connector would have plugged into. Thanks for your help
