Take a look at the back of the alternator , specifically , the bolt where the big wire goes that feeds the alternator's power to the battery . Make sure that bolt isn't sitting right up against the valvecover and short circuiting , this is a problem I've seen once or twice in the past on the 6 cyl engines .

If it's not that , you DO have a short circuit someplace , the next troubleshooting step would be to take all 3 fusable links off of the starter and see if the short is still there . If so , take all the wires off of the aux terminal block near the radiator . At some point of disconnecting stuff , the short will reveal itself in that once you take the shorted item off the line the battery terminal won't spark badly anymore . Now , carefully try one by one to touch the disconnected wires to where they go (with the battery hooked up , of course) , just lightly tap the wire end against it's terminal . No spark , it ain't your short . Lots of sparks , that's the wire your short is on .

Good Luck

If you find a shorted wire, either tape it up good or, replace it.
