Is this ALDL-OBD2 adapter safe to use?

Hi all,

I bought this on ebay - an ALDL-OBD2 adapter cable for GM/Pontiac:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3018220182...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Before trying to plug it in and use it, I thought I would check the pinouts with a continuity checker...

I have attached a table of the pin connections as tested by me.

Can anyone take a look please, and say with any certainty whether this is likely to work?
I have a 1991 Base Firebird 3.1v6

What is your goal for use of such an adapter?

If you're wanting to then plug your ALDL car into a ODB2 reader, it would not do much for you.

Re: Is this ALDL-OBD2 adapter safe to use?

OK, my basic goal is to get as much information from my car as possible, ideally in real time while the engine is running, but also anything available in diagnostic modes etc.

I am sufficiently into electronics to make my own USB-serial interface chip based cable given time, and I'd be keen to make the ultimate diagnostic interface available as a product at some point, but for now I was after a quick solution, and found this ALDL-OBD2 adapter on ebay. I already have OBD2-USB and OBD2-bluetooth adapters so it would be nice if I could use these to connect the car to my computer and run software designed for our cars. The advert specified GM compatibility and it has the right plug/sockets. The pinout diagram I posted is from my own testing of this cable with a multimeter.

So my questions are - is it safe to plug in, and is it likely to be usable?

No, you will not be able to use it that way.

GM ALDL is not compatible with ODB 2 adapters.

If you want to make your own ALDL to Serial adapter:

Otherwise you can buy premade USB cables here: http://www.1320electronics.com/products.html
and here: http://www.aldlcable.com/aldl.asp

[QUOTE=thtanner;6065109]No, you will not be able to use it that way.

GM ALDL is not compatible with ODB 2 adapters.

Hi, thanks, I have both those chips so will make up that adapter. I've seen some others I may try too.

Could you say exactly what the issue is with the cable I posted the pinout for please?
Cheers

Hi EnglishFirebird,

did you try to use your ALDL-OBD2 adapter with a standard OBD2 diagnostic interface?

Thanks.

Kind regards,

Pupkin.
