Re: Trunk Motor issue
The gear nut has a bad spot on it and needs to be replaced.

While you have it apart clean the track of old dried grease with WD40, then re-lube with white lithium grease or synthetic grease. Check the condition of the plastic guides that are in the track. The 89-early 91 had guides that used half the material compared to the 87-88 style. They are more prone to cracking and breaking. Broken guides will cause the latch assy to be misaligned while it travels up/down and can cause your gear nut to fail (as yours has).
Here is a link to the aftermarket guides that I make which are far superior to either version GM used.

I have all the parts to repair these pull-down units available on my web site.

Re: Trunk Motor issue
hi, I just ordered the guides form you and they went in pretty easy.I will definitely be keeping your info noted for sure. :-) The motor still works and only causes the issue when it is trying to pull the trunk down. I was on you site after purchasing the guides and wasn't sure if just the gear nut or the whole motor needed to be replaced. Are you pretty certain it seems to be just the nut?
thanks for writing.
