Ignition switch

I noticed my switch that the ignition rod goes into on the steering column was hanging loose. After I crawled my old *** under there to reattach it I noticed the rod was moving freely by hand. So I take the steering wheel off/apart to see if it just need reconnected, but I see nothing for the rod to connect to so it moves with the key. I don't know if you can buy whatever is missing so what I am looking at doing is putting a starter button on it and only using the ignition to unlock/lock the steering wheel. Has anyone completely eliminated that rod and switch? If so what's involved? The switch itself has a yellow wire (I'm thinking it's the starter switch?) Brown wire ( I'm thinking is accessory?) And 2 green wires (I have no clue what those are for?). To do this I'm thinking the accessory would have to be put on a switch as well. Don't know if it matters but I don't have a computer anymore I took it out when I took the motor out and put a carbed motor in. From left to right brown wire, yellow wire, green and green.
This is the rod that I see nothing to connect it to.

That's not the ignition actuator rod, that's the high beam rod.

Re: Ignition switch

Right: and what's in your hand is the headlight wiring.

One wire is the feed from the headlight switch (headlights: yes/no) and the other 2 are high and low beams respectively. Black of course is ground.

Re: Ignition switch

It's fairly common for the high beam rod to fall out of the switch. There's a cup on the switch for the end of the rod.

Excellent reference photo, Drew. I'll be saving a copy of that one.
