Help with ground strap

Really hoping someone can help. I was given a 1988 Camaro and want to give it to my daughter to use. It was running then a wire came off and it won't start now. I bought a new ground strap and hope this will fix the problem but obviously the old one has been rigged and was attached to something, but I have no idea where. Haven't been able to put it on yet and wanted to see if anyone has any idea what the altered wire was for. Thanks.

Re: Help with ground strap

Need a little more info where did you check grounds. Starter? Engine Block? Alt?

Re: Help with ground strap

I got it to turn over but it's very rough. There is a wire coming off the back of the distributer that goes nowhere.

Re: Help with ground strap

That "wire harness" seems very sketchy. It looks like it's grounded to the block with a red wire. Tell what kind of engine you have and I can post a wiring diagram.

Re: Help with ground strap

yea, some better pics would probably help? looks like somebody hacked/spliced into the ground strap to ground something. most ground straps go from the back of the cylinder head to the firewall. the ground cable from your battery should go to the block. positive cable to starter solenoid. check all those connections real good.

Re: Help with ground strap

It's a V6. I put a new ground strap on. The red wire was not connected to anything. The other end, the smaller black wire was but it pulled out when I touched it. I think it came from the pic I'm posting, but I'm not sure. Sorry for the lack of information. I'm just hopeless when it comes to wiring.

Re: Help with ground strap

Few things scare me more than when I see wire nuts under the hood of a car. Does the car run and work right now? Check the connections above.

You can try this wiring diagram and see where you're potentially missing wires.
