Another flip-up headlight thread...but different
Is there a way to have the headlights on a Firebird have 3 positions and still function regularly?
I'd like them to go from all the way down - come up half way - hit the brights, making them go up all the way and then, with the light switch, go back down.
...With out completely rewiring or re-engineering the motors? I'm ok with running wires and adding another relay or whatever but my headlight work perfectly right now and dont want to make them not ever work again
thank you

You'd have to rework and engineer a few things on top of that the headlights half up would aim into the bumper and not in front of the car.

Im not worried about where the headlights point right now just how to get the headlights motors to work the way i want them to

Interesting concept .With your present system , provided you are talking about your 1987 "Transmaro" (ok , NOW I am scared
) or your 1990 Firebird , both presumably controlled by the electronic module rather than the older (1986 and earlier) relay/limit switch system , no I do not believe there would be a practical way to modify the control module to do what you want . Now with that said , if you wanted to swap in the 1986 and earlier system with it's relays and limit switches , it would then take only the addition of two more limit switches (one per side , that activates at the middle position where you want the doors to stop) and a couple of relays and you'd have your two position lights .
Like I said , interesting concept and I'd love to see the finished results .

It is for the "transmaro" i call it the Crossbreed. But thank you for your reply. Is swapping out the systems a semi painless process?

I read the the older motors simply worked on "over torque". but that was and 82... where are the limit switches?
Re: Another flip-up headlight thread...but different
Hello CM Jones , Here are two wiring diagrams , one for the 1982 which is the early system containing limit switches and relays to control the headlight doors , and one for the 1992 which is the later system using an electronic module that monitors the current of the motor and when the motor reaches it's mechanical limit of travel in either direction (up or down) the rise in motor current is detected by the module to turn off power to the motor(s) .
You most likely have the 1992 style lights , and for your modification purpose you'd need the early lights like the 1982 system .
