90 trans am intermittent start

So these last couple of days my trans am has been sometimes starting and sometimes not. when I turn the key sometimes there is completely no crank at all but all electronics work. I bought a brand new vats key and that does nothing either. But its just weird because sometimes it starts with no problem then sometimes it just doesn't want to. Please help. Thanks.

Sounds like the lock cylinder. You can. Easily take the enable relay out of the equation by jumpering the two large gauge wires green and yellow.

Thanks, but is there an easier way to bypass it without having to tear up my entire dash just to get to the vats modulator

Could it be the starter solenoid starting to go?

thats what i thought at first, but it does it like once every 30 starts and it won't start for a solid 10 mins. Then I just wait it out and eventually it starts. I just went out and started it a few minutes ago and it fired up no problem. So maybe it's the starter but I don't want to change it if there is no problem because they are a pain to replace on these 3rd gens.

Re: 90 trans am intermittent start

Does it not start on the first try of the day while still cold, or only after it's been driven for a while. Usually failing solenoids start showing problems after being heated up, but if you wait a bit they will work again, but sooner or later it's no go for good

Also, if it's the solenoid, putting the battery on a charger when you try to start it will get it to start, or it will start when you try to jump start it. Solenoids don't always just stop working, it can be very gradual. I had one once where it was once every two weeks it wouldn't start, and then gradually got worse.
