Gear speed sensor to hall effect

Is it at all possible to change from a gear style speed sensor to a hall effect style sensor. I've found a hall effect sensor that will fit in the 700r4 extension housing (1988 C1500 sensor), not sure on what kind of reluctor ring I'll need yet. The sensor is a 2 wire and the plug is the same as what's on our cars. But will this work ? I already have an SGI5E and my car has the VSS buffer box. Thanks in advance!

Yes, you can cut down the ratio using the SGI5E and split it using the buffer.

You wouldn't happen to know what size reluctor ring I would need would you ?

I don't think a 2 wire is Hall effect.

I didn't think so ether but that's the only thing it could be from what I've researched. If you Google 1988 C1500 speed sensor you'll see what im talkin about

Re: Gear speed sensor to hall effect

Confirmed fix!

I was able to use a 1988 C1500 reluctor ring and speed sensor on my 1991 RS. In addition to the speed sensor and reluctor ring an SGI5E from Dakota digital is required. The way I wired mine is as follows.

I tapped into the yellow wire that runs from the speed sensor to the VSS buffer box an plugged the send side of the wire into the "signal" input and the other side into "out 3" you will be able to a just it from there. You can also see application 3 in the instruction sheet for the SGI5E. Also this Here is the number on the tail shaft housing I'm assuming is the P/N 8673553-2.
