Egr solenoid function

I have done a few searches and have found conflicting answers to my question.

Vehicle 1992 5.7 z28

Question: when the egr solenoid is energized should the valve close or open?

Im preping a new engine to go into my sons z28 and Im replacing everthing under the hood except for the solenoid as a nos one cant be found. I puchased an alternative one for the car but it works backwards to my stock one with 81k miles on it.

The factory one is open until its energized then it closes. The new one I purchased (autozone evs30) is closed until energized.
I took the factory one apart and there is a spring between port A and the internal valve leading me to believe its supposed to be open until energized since the spring keeps them apart until power is supplied.
What have others found on the tpi cars? Thanks

I agree with the confusing information floating around about them. Just curious, in your experience do you think that they can be rebuilt?

Yeah. They come apart pretty easy. The coils magnetized and cause the solid metal valve slide. Its a simple design.
I just checked my other sons rs 5.0 solenoid and its a different design and is closed without being energized. Im gonna dig through my parts now to see if I have another tpi one to test the function. Ill keep updating to get a solid answer.

Re: Egr solenoid function

Ok got it solved. Tpi egr solenoid valve is a NO valve. That means it normally open. A TBI solenoid is a closed solenoid . I found another and tested it and it was open just like my original and when I put power to it it closed. Ill just be reusing my original and returning the new one I bought as its the wrong type.

Re: Egr solenoid function

Any ideas on if it is feasible to repair the stock one, or a solid replacement?

I think its feesable. But depends on what its doing or not doing. I took the stock one all apart and cleaned it really well. I added a new foam rear filter as the original was deteriorated. It wasnt sealing completely before. Now it works perfectly wirh no bleeding off of vacuum. As for a replacement I have found an aftermarket corvette one from 86-91 that is the exact same but the mount is different. But from the looks of it the camaro mount should be able to be put on it.

Re: Egr solenoid function

Do you remember the part number of the Corvette unit? I might just grab one of those and then see if you would be willing to do a repair of my stock one. At least I think it was the stock one from my GTA. I had issues last time I had it smogged and used a spare I'd picked up. The spare had a different part number. But I still failed with the spare. Now I don't remember which solenoid ended up on the car. Ended up having to bypass the solenoid completely to get it to pass but it idled like crap until I put it back on there. And now I cannot locate the other solenoid. It should be in my garage, but no idea where. Well, I got off on a tangent didn't I? Bottom line, is that I need a functioning solenoid because I have smog test coming up in a few months.

Re: Egr solenoid function

Just saw that thread. Hopefully that new one is for my GTA. If so, I'm all over it. If not, I guess I grab one of those vette pieces.

Yes, I'm in SoCal. I'm in Camarillo, which is up in Ventura County near Oxnard. Shaun has been up to my house a couple of times before he sold his car . One of these days when I can make it down that way, I was going to hit you up. Shaun said you might be able to hook me up on a deal for some exhaust manifolds. Let me know if you are ever up in my area.
