Speedometer/Trip affected by temperature
So, I've spent some time searching on here and get mostly Camaro speedometer problems, but could not find information about one affected by temperature unless I missed it. Please give me a link if I did! This is on my 90 Firebird Formula TPI 305. Since I bought the car in July of this year, the speedometer and trip work fine. Two weeks ago was our first cold morning, about 36. I drove it to a show 12 miles away and noticed the speedometer and trip was not working at all until I got about a mile from the show and then it started working again. Nice to keep the miles off the car I guess! When I left the show to come home, it worked fine all the way home and the temperature is about 65. Tested this again on Sunday morning. Took it for a quick ride in 35 degree weather, not working. Took it for another quick ride after lunch in 60 degree weather, working just fine. I've tested this about 4 times now with the same result. The last test I did, I took off in 35 degree weather with the heater on high and after about 10 miles of driving, it started working. It seems if the temperature is below 40, it won't work, but anything above 40 or when the heater warms the car interior up good, it starts working again. Seems odd to me. Thanks for any help!

Re: Speedometer/Trip affected by temperature
I can't say why the speedo wouldn't be working, but the trip could be the gear in the counter is drying out, and they seize on the shaft over time, get brittle. Maybe that gear, which is referenced in other threads, when cold grabs the shaft and when it warms up it is enough to let it spin. Maybe you mean the odometer and trip aren't working and not the actual speedometer?

There is another thread with step by step to repair it, but I forget where it is or the thread name

Cool, well let me know if you find it. I'm awaiting the completion of the gear/shoulder bolt on the other thread in the link above before I even pull the cluster out. Good winter project! Thanks for the help!
