What obd1 scanner do you guys use?

I'm looking into a ses light and trying to get a scanner on the car. My father has a blue point obd2 scanner and when I bought the cable to go from a 2 to a 1 it wont scan. So I'm asking you guys, what do you personally use?

I'm trying to do something more than the paper clip method because with that all I get is code 12 and that's just telling me that there are no codes. (If that's the case whys the light on?)

Remember , Code 12 means no or improper distributor reference pulses are being sent from the ICM to the ECM . In normal code reading code 12 means that the distributor isn't turning (as is shouldn't be when reading codes , which is done with the engine off) but as a trouble code , code 12 could be telling you that your ICM (or ECM , or connections between the two) could be malfunctioning in a way that enough pulses are getting through to run the engine , but are somehow compromised enough to trigger the light .

so what your saying is that there's a chance that the ECM and ICM are having trouble talking to each other and that's what's setting off the light?

Basically, code 12 w/ eng off is OK (diagnostic check), w/ eng running, not OK (no dist signal to ecm). With the engine off if there are any trouble codes. You should see them after code 12.Each code flashes 3 times, with a 5 sec pause between different codes.
