New Member, Shifter harness/B&M Star Shifter question...

Hello All, thanks for adding me to the group. Fisrts a bit of back story, Im working on an 82 Z28 was given to my boys for a learning platform. Currently the motor is out and going through the machine shop. Long story here, but the previous builder made some critical errors.... when done, the 350 is going back in with a T350 transmission. Which brings me to the question at hand.

Im installing a B&M star shifter. It only has 2 micro switches, reverse lights and Neutral safety. The factory plug has 6 wires. The B&M installation manual is far from helpful and does not mention this at all.

After about 4 hours if internet search (that led me to this forum) and some help from Orangebird, the following is how I think the harness breaks out:

Pin A - Blh/Wht - ???? -what are these for and what should I do with them?
Pin B - Org/Blk - ???? - what are these for and what should I do with them?
Pin C - Drk Blu - Reverse lights
Pin D - Lt Grn - Reverse lights
Pin E - Purple - Neutral Safety
Pin F - Yellow - Neutral Safety

Thank you in advance,
Cordell.

Hi Cordell , Here are the wiring diagrams I told you about in our PM . Look at the detail of the two switches , the park/neutral switch (called the "gear selector switch" in the drawing) and the reverse light switch . You will see that the park/neutral switch gets the large yellow wire on one side and the large purple on the other side . The switch "closes" (connects the two wires together) only when in park or neutral , allowing the starter solenoid to operate only in park or neutral . It's the same with the reverse light switch , the small dark blue and small light green both go to the two terminals on the reverse light switch and get closed together only when the shifter is in reverse . For the starter drawing I included the carb version , but the CFI is the very same , starter solenoid circuit wise .

I hope this helps and feel free to ask any other questions you might have about your shifter ....

Now , as to the other two wires , I need to ask you a question ;

Will you be using the factory equipped computer controlled carb. (or does it have the "CFI" , Cross Fire Injection) ?

If you are installing a non computer controlled carb (doing a computer delete) you can disregard those two wires and just tape off the ends . If you are using a computer controlled carb (or CFI) those two are supposed to go to what would be a third switch on the shifter , that closes whenever in gear . The closing of that switch "tells" the computer that the transmission is in fact in gear , to better manage the engine's idle . I'm not 100% certain but I'd suspect possible stalling problems in gear at idle if (using CCC or CFI) that third switch isn't installed .
