Vacuum Adv Distributor Swap And Tach Help
Hi. I have a '84 Camaro Z28 with a stock L69 305 HO engine. The distributor's advance is computer controlled and I'm removing the ECM so I want to swap the distributor. My plan Is to take an old HEI vacuum advance one off of an engine from my collection of SBCs from 70s & 80s GM vehicles I have laying around. I don't really know anything about tachs so my question is do I need a specific kind of distributor if I wanna keep my factory tach working in my stock gauges? I know the tach gets its reading from the distributor, but can I just use any random HEI and make it work? Do I need a specific type of distributor to plug into the tach wire? If so, Is it possible to modify one to be able to use a tach if I don't have one?

You can use any hei coil in cap. There is a terminal in the side of the cap marked tach .

You don't have to "do" anything. Just plug it in. the older HEI wires up exactly the same as the one your car came with.
