Re: Help!

Some history would help... like, I'm pretty sure you didn't buy the car new and it's been perfect and pristine all these years, and this morning you opened the hood, and... suddenly … this...

I'm pretty sure something has been going on. Maybe yerbasic Previous Owner problems. Maybe you're putting in some some nice new headers with that useless paint stuff that comes on them won't last 5 minutes after the motor is first started. Maybe a carb swap, or worse, all at the same time. Your last photo CERTAINLY looks to be in that general category. A HACK JOB if I ever saw one.

The 1st photo looks like it goes to a relay; can't see all the wire colors, but it looks like probably the fuel pump relay. I don't see a FP relay for it to plug into in the photo however. But in that same photo I see the MAP sensor with no wires plugged into it and no vacuum line. Not a good sign.

The 2nd photo looks like it would be for the VSS. I also notice that there's no intermediate steering shaft. This does not bode well for precision control of the vehicle in tight turn situations.

The 3rd photo is a … plug. Has 2 wires. No idea what it is. A photo showing the wire colors might help. If I was going to guess, and this is PURELY a guess mind you, I'd guess that it's the one that goes to the power steering, to tell the ECM to raise the idle when the wheels get cut all the way to one side, so the motor doesn't stall while trying to park.

The last one looks like it might have been the coolant temp sensor, at least by the wire colors in the harness. Looks like there's been some SERIOUS hackage in that area. I'd be tempted to laugh but that would be rude, and you need help, rather than that.

I don't think a "plug diagram" is the right answer for what ails your car just now.

Care to make any confessions?

Re: Help!

This is an original 85 carb car and has been swapped over to the 89 tbi. Don’t ask why, I am not sure. I can assure you that the butt connectors are not my handy work. I solider and heat shirk all of my connections. Anyways, I have a red blue wire on the plug you cannot see the colors. I am glad you have pointed out the sensor with no plug or vacuum line. I’d like to know where that goes as well. I am coming into this blind. Thank you for the help

Re: Help!

An original carb car isn't going to have all the right stuff for a TBI motor. No way around that.

I think you'd be better advised at this point, to put the 85 carb stuff, including the intake manifold and all the wiring, back on top of the 89 castings. There's NO WAY the 85 carb electronics will work the TBI.

Re: Help!

Car was stripped down to nothing and put back together with all tbi, even chassis wiring was changed. Nothing carb left what so ever

Re: Help!

Looks to me like you're missing a whole bunch of TBI stuff. No matter what you "think or "were told", there's parts missing.

Given the history you describe, best advice I can give you is, go get all the missing stuff off of a TBI vehicle. Probably doesn't have to be a Camaro/firebird; AFAIK the TBI setups in trucks and Caprices and such were similar enough that the individual pieces will mostly swap over. Post up what you find and I'm sure there's people here who can tell you whether you have what you need.

Re: Help!

In the first picture, the barometric sensor can go away. It isn't used on a TBI vehicle. There should be two relays there: fuel pump and electric fan. Although some Firebirds have the electric fan relay on the radiator support.

Second pic with the PRP, BLK, and WHT wires. A guess would be that it was added in for a heated O2 sensor. Ring out the PRP wire and see if it goes to pin D7 on the ECM. That is the O2 sensor input.

Third pic, the connector you are holding is for the power steering pressure switch. The other open connector is likely for the windshield washer pump. Should be a blue & a red wire?

Fourth pic with the splices, it is for the intake air temperature sensor (IAT). It is located in the air cleaner housing.

Re: Help!

RBob and everyone else, I think I have it all covered now. Only thing I am missing is either the fuel pump relay or fan relay, have to do a search for wire color to determine which is which, thanks again for all the help. The plug under the steering column is for the wiper motor. 🤷🏻*♂️ Ones up front were for washer pump motor and power steering sensor.

You're welcome. Interesting, may it be that that portion of the harness should be routed above the steering column?

Checking some other sources, that wire bundle with the wiper connector goes over the brake booster. Which locates it close enough to plug into the wiper motor.

Re: Help!

I do see that now, after doing a little more searching. I will post pictures once all is plugged in. Hopefully in the next day or so I’ll have it together. Thanks again
