Swapping ECMs

Can a 86 or 87 Camaro carbureted ECM be swapped into an 84 Z28? I heard the 86 and up computers are faster and updated over the earlier ones. Would this interfere with any of the electronics if both computers operate the same sensors and have the same hookup? The motor is the LG4 with automatic.

According to my wiring diagrams, the systems are compatible except for a few minor items. For instance, the '84 EGR wire is on pin T, however; the '86 diagram shows the EGR to be on pin 19 and is PWM. This should be compatible with your older system. The other difference is on pin E for the idle solenoid. Your '84 shows it to be a "throttle kicker" that has 12vB+ with engine run; but the '86 system shows it to be an idle solenoid with less than 1v with engine running.

Other than those 2 things, the schematics show both systems to be identical.
