Wierd charging issues
Hi!
So, I got a 91 GTA with a fresh 350 (355) which worked just fine until last weekend when I decided to change from stock stamped steel rockers to 1.6 full rollers.
In order to make room for lifting the valvecovers I took away the altenator on the drivers side, the air pump stuff and the heater hoses on the passenger side. AC had already been removed.
Did my thing (the rockers) and struggeled with the passenger side valvecover and when I was done with the car and listening for ticking rockers the charge meter was really low. I suspected it was me turning the motor without spark for setting the rockers and went for a little drive. Oil preassure, charge and temp meter was all over the place. So, what now? Battery showed 12.9V. Could it be the alternator? Got a new one from RockAuto and installed it - things looked a lot better, for about 10 minutes. After a little WOT and electric fans starting - the charge meter dropped again to ~8V. I went home and started scratching my head.
So, recently (30 minutes ago) I checked the ground braids back of the block, the negative battery cable going to the font of the block and went for a little test drive. With headlights up the charge dropped to 12V and continued to decline. Motor temp was cool so no electric fans spinning. I immediately turned around, went home and parked. I park in a little uphill slope in fornt of my house, and standing there in park with headlights off the car charges 13V and all meters look good. It almost seems it needs the uphill angle for some connection to make contact.
Alternator was hot after this 500 yard drive. Battery shows 12.9V (checked with volt meter)
What is going on here? I must have made something come loose when tearing stuff around with the valve covers.
New AC Delco alternator
All ground connections are tight
Wierd (low) charge, making meters go bananas
Any tips?
