My name is Kris and I'm new here, I have a 350 small block LT1 swapped 85' Trans Am w an auto trans. I've had some issues with the neutral safety switch/ gear selector switch. I'm looking for a way to by-pass the switch that won't end in a fire risk or hot-wiring straight from battery to starter. I've tried looking around and through forums but I can't seem to find a definitive way to do it. If anyone could provide me with a little insight I would greatly appreciate it!!
Does the 1985 Trans-Am still have the Original THM700-R4 Transmission?
Does it still have the Original Gear-Selector...
And the Original Gear-Selector Position Switch Assembly (Neutral-Safety is within the Switch Assembly)?
If the Answer is: "YES"?
...Testing a Bypass-Jumper for the Neutral Safety Switch, is rather straight forward and simple.
The Image below shows the Gear-Selector Position Switch and corresponding Electrical Connector:
The 10 AWG Solid Yellow Wire and 10 AWG Solid Purple Wire are the two legs of the Neutral Safety Circuit.
To Bypass the Gear-Selector Position Switch for Testing Purposes...
Disconnect the Electrical Connector from the Gear-Selector Position Switch.
Obtain or make a 10 AWG (Or a Larger Gauge) Jumper-Wire.
For the next Step, be very careful NOT to allow anything conductive (other than the Jumper Wire) or Grounded, to interfere with exposed connections.
Next Jump the Yellow and Purple Wires.
Next attempt to Crank/ Start the Engine.
