Annoying Key Buzzer
Annoying Key Buzzer
Hi Guys.
Been a long time. Sold my 86' when i was 20 to get an engagement ring
Now 41 (married to the same woman
and managed to find and buy it back from the lady I sold it to 21 years ago...with only an extra 15k kilometers on the dial. Shes in great shape, but I have a weird problem. The 'key still in' buzzer won't shut off when the key is removed. With the key it, it goes until the key is in the run / start positions. Buzzer shuts off when car is running but when i shut if off (and door is closed, lights off etc) and remove key it runs until I disconnect the battery. Weirdly enough, it was fine until I replaced the rear hatch shocks and left the defrost wires disconnected (no need and don't trust them not to blow the switch)...could it be related.
Is this likely the 'ignition key warning switch' gone bad in the column? I fiddled with it and got it to stop buzzing once when turning the key on and off several times. Any input is appreciated.

Why do you still have a key buzzer in the first place?? Remove that stupid thing.
The contact in the steering column where the lock cylinder goes is obviously bad...

Re: Annoying Key Buzzer
Here's a schematic of the Audio Alarm circuit from the 85 Camaro. Other cars are similar - but *might* be a little different.

It sounds like the Alarm is shorted to ground,.. probably inside the Audio Alarm itself. If you look at the 'notes' in that schematic the alarm should make 3 types of chimes,... Slow (Seatbelt), Fast (Key), and fast pulsed (headlights). If you can figure out what chime of the 3 is sounding than you can limit your investigation to that circuit.
Probably just need to replace the alarm, but it could be something 'dumb' like a stuck door switch or sumthin'.

Re: Annoying Key Buzzer
Its just the annoying buzz that the notes say is for all conditions....that's what has me stumped. Lights and door seem to work (they come on with the buzz in the background when they should)

Update
Fiddled with it for a few hours tonight. Noticed that my alternator was making a loud whine when running and was too hot to touch after about 2 minutes of running. Battery voltage was 12.5 before starting and about 14 when the car was running. Weirdly enough, when i disconnected the two wire lead from the alternator the buzzer shut off....could it be that the buzzer was a warning buzzer for a alternator or bad charging issue? Didnt have the choke light on like some people do but could I have a phase out on my diode? No service engine light but I need to check that bulb as crossing A and B pins on the ALDL doesn't make the light come on. Could an alternator issue cause the buzzer to sound? All the other warning chimes work properly with the two wire lead disconnected (key in with door open, lights on with car off and door open etc)
Any ideas?

Re: Annoying Key Buzzer
I have had several cars with the "buzzer". I just cut the "buzzer" wire & sealed the cut end. No more buzzer
