'87 GTA Digital Dash- Odometer comes on with key on but goes off and doesn't change

Car: 1988 Pontiac Trans Am GTA
Engine: 355 TPI w/AFR 195s Dyno Don Headers
Transmission: 700R4
Axle/Gears: Borg Warner 9 Bolt, 3.27 gears
'87 GTA Digital Dash- Odometer comes on with key on but goes off and doesn't change
Question- A buddy has a '87 GTA with Digital Dash and the odometer comes on shows mileage but then goes off when car is started but then it also is not advancing? Any ideas or would it have to be sent off for repair and is anyone doing that?
