Burnt working connector

Hello. First time posting on the forum though been a member for a long time over three different 3rd gen’s.
i recently purchased a very good condition 1988 Trans Am GTA hard top with 350 TPI. After changing a sensor or two everything is working besides the rear defogger now. Not sure if it’s related but above the transmission dipstick there is a wiring harness that looks pretty crispy to me. Which I have attached a pic of. Not sure if related but want address even though everything is working to my knowledge. As far as the rear defogger goes. Guy I bought it off just bought after market hatch struts and the wires are on the tabs. When you press the defogger it lights up and shuts off immediately. I did purchase a new relay that goes under the passages dash but have not installed it yet. Just looking for what that harness connector is for and thoughts on the defogger issue. Thanks in advance as this forum has been fantastic over the years.

Re: Burnt working connector

That looks like potting goop, not melted plastic.

Also, don't press and hold the defogger button, the poop hatch struts aren't properly insulated at the body and it creates a dead short in that circuit. I got a set of AC Delco ones and they work properly.

Re: Burnt working connector

Prob right on the wiring especially since everything is working. Regarding the hatch struts, they are Chinese knock offs. I am having a hard time finding the right ones that have the rear spoiler and defogger. Ac delco part numbers look like 510-510 or 510-511. Neither mention defogger. Anyone know the correct part number?

510-509 is what I'm running.

Re: Burnt working connector

This thread has a lot of discussion about strut replacement options, https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/inte...ruts-wont.html

That relay & connector shown in your photo is an old unsealed Pack-Con style. They're junk. If you're going to do anything with it just cut it out and start over with something else that uses a Metripack 630 size terminal.

Re: Burnt working connector

The specific connectors in the photo are part of the HVAC system. The red wire is 12V to the blower motor high-speed relay; black is ground for the blower motor; and green is for the compressor. Not related in any manner way shape form or fashion to the hatch release except for possibly being on the same vehicle.

The red and black wires VERY often burn up. As stated, though with much more restraint than I would use myself, they are JUNK. I would argue, the WORST connector design EVAH. However yours look surprisingly good, actually; the wires themselves aren't even brown yet, let alone black like they often are. The ones that burn up are the red one and the black one. The ugly stuff is, as mentioned, just potting compound.
