I want to change the gauge cluster in this car (92), how hard is it to do? I can build my own panel no problem it is just the wiring part I am wondering about.
I've done a lot of custom work to my car and making a custom dash was the hardest part of this project. The bezels they sell are far from bolt in and your dash will require major surgery. You will end up cutting and fabricating an area for the dash assembly to live. Wiring is pretty straight forward as there are good diagrams out there. The OEM wiring is messy though and you may want to clean up some of it. I ended up using Autometer Gages along with their harness. I bought mini LED indicators for turn signals, and other warning lights and had to modify the bezel to incorporate them. At the time I did this, the car was stripped down so I laid the dash harness out on a bench and used a 12v AGM battery out of one of my kids scooters to trace and verify each circuit. The headlight switch will be the hardest part, both to implement and to wire. With the bezels that are made for these cars there is no room for the plunger style OEM headlight switch. That part of the dash gets cut out. You can't just use any other switch either as a replacement due to the electrical loads in the switch. I ended up incorporating a 3rd gen firebird headlight switch and rewired it accordingly. Also, FWIW, A GPS speedo is the way to go. No need to worry about adapters or rear gear changes.
Here is my build thread that I update from time to time. There may be more insight that I am forgetting. Posts #45 #113, #136, #254 shows the custom gages.
