Keyless entry unit, can it be put in door?

I got my keyless entry today. The instructions say to put it in the dash. I didn't get far today. I got the door panel taken off, and the under dash panels off. I was trying to fish the wires through the rubber hose that all the factory wires go through when I had to quit and go to work.

My question is, I think I can make all of the necessary connections inside the door itself. Could I just put the unit in the door? Has anybody tried this? Will it pick up the signal? Will get moisture in it? If the moisture is a problem I could wrap it in plastic or something. If the unit could be put in the door it would simplify the process a lot

I'd keep the control box in the passenger compartment due to both the moisture and range of activation issues.

Got it from JCwhitney, I finished putting it in today, well the door lock part anyway. I put it in the dash like the instructions said to.

The valiant remotes have a nice heavy OE GM feel, much like you'd get with a new car. Has seperate lock and unlock buttons too.

if you haven't already, wrap the wires together with some electrical tape so they don't bind on the steering column or gas/brake/clutch pedal linkage. secure the module in place with some cable ties or tape as well.

while your adding keyless entry, if you have a car without power hatch release, you might want to add it. note, there are different revisions of the hatch pulldown setup. not all thirdgen pulldowns will interchange.

thirdgen hatch pulldown without power hatch solenoid

power hatch solenoid and cable that runs to lock

power hatch pulldown with electric release solenoid installed

I've got a power hatch release, and I've got that the power pull down. I've had to rebuilt that stupid power pull down before. I'd like to switch to the manual type latch my '85 had.

consider yourself lucky, power hatch release was not a common option on thirdgens unless the car was a loaded transam or iroc model.

P.S. i've got two birds that use the same pulldown setup. i always keep a spare hatch pulldown around. (just in case one breaks)

I had to buy a new clear plastic case, I think you know what I'm talking about, for my car right after i got it. It took me a while to figure out why my hatch wasn't acting right, then I found that the case had been busted. I think it was like $30 from the dealership, ouch.

both birds were bought used. one had the power hatch pulldown wires disconnected and had sheetmetal screws holding the latch in place on the track.

hack of putting screws in track did allow for the back hatch to close and stay latched, but i was always slamming it shut. hunted up a salvage yard mechanism and was in business.
