Starting have some ignition problems this year. I'd be driving along fine and then all of a sudden the car would start to miss badly and the tach would go crazy. Then all of sudden, it would stop.

Through a little detective work I figured out that it only happened when the car got warmed up. It was otherwise totally unpredictable. I discovered that after unplugging the tach lead to the distributor, I never had that problem again.

Talking to one of the older mechs at the local chevy dealer, he said he remembered seeing this problem before and believes it is the tach filter shorting out the ignition system. Makes sense. The parts guys said that GM does not make this part anymore.

Does anyone know of a place where I can get a replacement? Am I stuck searching out the boneyards for a working unit?

I have been able to drive the 5-speed without the tach but I really need to get it working to really DRIVE it.

 

It sounds more like a distributor pick up coil more than a tach filter, but in a ny case, you'll probably need to search the boneyards.
