New tach won't work.....

Okay i installed a mini-tach in my gta because the digital tach is a)inprecise and b) quits at about 3500 rpms. Well i wired it up just like it said in the instructions and when i run the engine, it doesn't read anything. I checked the power and grounds to the tach and they're fine. I spliced the white tach (???) wire on the coil for a signal. It says in the instructions that you are supposed to a)tap into the signal from the existing tach wire or b)from anything on the "negative" side of the coil. Can someone shed light on this for me?
