car keeps on running AFTER the key is out
car keeps on running AFTER the key is out
I just bought an 84 anniversary TA. It originally came with a 305/Auto. But has been converted to a NON-electronic carbed 327, and 5-speed. When I go to turn the car off and take the key out, the ignition cylinder turns and the key comes right out, yet the car keeps on running. What could be causing this weird problem?!?
Where do I start?

The ign switch has two outputs that are hot in the run position - one is hot in start & the other is not. The two outputs are isolated when the switch is turned off. The hot in start output powers the ign system (and other loads), and the other output powers the alternator field (and other loads). If the alternator field is being powered by the same source as the ign system, such that the two loads are not isolated when the ign switch is turned off, the engine will continue to run when the switch is turned to the off position. This is one possible scenerio that would cause the problem that you have described.
Thanks Tim! That's sounds like the source of my problem. The ignition switch could have an internal short where both outputs are shorted together. Or it could be in the wiring. Guess I'll take a look at the wiring under the steering column.
Anyone know what color the output wires are?
I know it's time to buy a Chilton's for this car.
thanks again!

Well, here is one such case where this probelm could happen. If there is a piece of carbon in two of mores of the cylender heads. that is of a large size, it can actually keep igniting fuel in the engineeven after it is off. When the fuel ignites, it keeps sucking in more fuel since it's a carb, so it will keep running until the carbon cools off. If this is the case, just give the pedal a press when it is doing this. If giving it more gas stops the problem, then that could be your problem.
I had a friend that had this problem, and the car would run after you took out the key, locked the doors, closed them and walk away. It got about an extra 20 sec. of running.
But due to the fact that it is a carbed engine, that is a possibility of what is going on.
When using, EFI, it can't put out any more fuel, so the engine cannot keep turning over after the power to the injectors is cut.
