No timing advance
No timing advance
Hey Guys....I installed a 350HO330 crate engine with the Scoggin Dickey TPI Vortec Baseplate and do not have "timing advance." Everyone said it was my MAP sensor then the others said i don't have a MAP, that the MAF replaced the MAP. Then others indicated the MAP replaced the MAF and that the MAP is for speed density '90-91....Shewee. At any rate. "I don't have timing advance." How does this all work? Where do I begin trouble shooting? ....BTW; the 350 replaced the 305 TPI

Stan,
First, the MAF was used on TPI engines from 1985-1989; the MAP sensor (Speed Density) was from 1990-1992
Did yo get a "Trouble Code"? Have you double checked all connections at the EST Module, Ignition Module and Coil? Also check the "ECM/IGN" fuse.

Thanks for the response Ozzy:
I've checked connections at every place except the ignition module...not sure where it would be...I sure need a book on this thing...ALL DATA reference book indicated, due to reading "not reading" as displayed on the scanner that i needed to check the ECS C terminal and that if it was below 2 volts "replace ECM." It was .05 volts. I replaced the ECM but still have the problem. The quick connect wire on the passenger side which is disconnected to time then reconnected, doesn't work right either. Car will run with it disconnected but when connected she just coughs like timing is advanced beyond recognition and won't start...I wonder if it is the prom? going from a 305 to 350????

Speaking of books, I just recently bought the TPI Swappers Guide. I'm pretty sure you have seen it in catalogs. I got mine from Barnes & Noble and it has an excellent section on troubleshooting every code on the TPI. It will show you step by step and with electrical diagrams too.
Good luck,

I have a simmilar problem with my 350 Vortec TPi......except that my car wont run at all with the EST Connector disconnected? Are these problems related to the same cause? This problem has been driving me crazy for a while. Any Help greatly Appreciated.
