Re: HELP!!!!

just install a posi in the rear you have. V6 cars came with 3.42 gears and 28 spline axles. All you need is a good 3 series posi unit.

The posi is the only difference between V8 and V6 cars, other than the optional rear disc brakes

Re: HELP!!!!

not quite true, not all V8 got posi.. but yep, other than that no difference in the rearends and 3.42 should probably be fine with the 350 as well.

Re: HELP!!!!

so what you guys are saying is that I can put a "posi unit" in the rear without having to change the whole rear end, and where can I get one and how much do you think it will cost me? secondly you are saying that the 3.42 gears that are stock in it will hold up to the stress that the 350 is going to put on it? thanks again, for all your help

Re: HELP!!!!

yep, just go look on ebay and you will find posi carriers galore!
there are no differences in a 3.42 gear-set taken from a v8 compared to one from a v6 rearend. it's just the same.
if it will hold up to the 350 power can't be told, but you have to take the ring & pinion out anyway to put in the limited slip carrier, so you can check for uneven wear, cracks etc and make a decision based on what you see, but otherwise yes. having a 91, your axles should be 28 splines as opposed to 26 as used up to 87 (imho). keep this in mind when looking for a posi unit.

you might want to read the article beefing up your 10bolt and make sure to study the stickies and tech-articles in general.

i dont know if extern links are allowed on this site, if not please forgive me and just remove this link.

Re: HELP!!!!

I believe that 82-89 were 26 spline and 90-02 were 28 spline.

Re: HELP!!!!

thanks for all the info. I was wondering if someone on here who has done the conversion to a camaro like mine. can give me a list of parts that they used and tell me what they used how they did it, where it was bought and the prices of the parts. I think the only problem I will have is paying for the parts I'm pretty sure I can do it all by myself as I'm somewhat of a backyard mechanic. but this is my first car and myself and my ex's dad is helping me do this conversion. I thank you all for your information and advice, thanks.

Re: HELP!!!!

The quickest and easiest way is to install this: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

or I would just find a good complete posi rear end locally.

Re: HELP!!!!

firstly, how exactly does this locker thing work? secondly if I'm to find a posi rear end what are the specs that I need to make sure I put the right rear end into my camaro?
----------
*the right posi rear end, one of my helpers told me that a chevy truck 12 bolt posi rear end would work if it was the right size.

Re: HELP!!!!

if i were you i would at least think twice about the powertrax lockers. do a search, i did and decided to get a limited slip differential of other type. although straight-line traction is probably the best offered by any LSD, there are stories about a lot of noise and clicks when turning.. so it might be a good choice for drag-car, but not for street, autox or similar.

but to each his own. i'm just giving you a hint, please do an extensive search for "powertrax locker" on this board and decide yourself. all these chapters were discussed a 100 times on the board, read them and you can still hit this thread up with questions you got afterwards
