Hi, Im looking for a cheap 700r4 transmision for a rebuild. Because it will be rebuilt its current operating condition\miles is not so critical. Im not looking for something thats be abused or left outside in the weather for the last 10 years but something in resonable shape that has potential to be rebuilt. Although primarily im looking for something cheap ide also would prefer something from one of the later v8 camaros and firebirds 88-92. Really any v8 700r4 transmissions from a car or 2 wheel drive truck built from 87-93 is fine but would prefer from a camaro or firebird as it has the correct tail houseing already on it so i dont have to find one. Ill concider 700r4s from other years but again am really looking for one of the later modles. Well im really looking for something a bit cheaper. Because its going to a rebuild reguardless of its current condition im kinda hopeing to find one cheap maby one thats slipping or lost a gear or whatever. Or if someone wants to let a working one go cheap thats fine with me too lol. Because again its going to be completely rebuilt reguardless of weather it works or not so no need to spend more money than I have to on a core. Although if nothing else turns up ill let you know.

 

Actually $150 is pretty cheap for a transmission, working or not.

 

I sold my slipping 700r4 from an 88 with a transgo shift kit for $75.00 and it took a while to sell.

 

Yea 150 is on the low side for a working 700r4 around here its not uncommon to see them for sale on average about $200 for just working used take outs but for unknown conditions or needing rebuilds ive so far ive had offeres ranging in the 50-75 range. So far not in the year range im looking for but if nothing better turns up ill be concidering them.

Well theres absolutly no rush at all. My situation is ive got an 86 T/A that in some respects was well taken care of in others not so well the trans being one of the not so well areas. Right now it works great but the trans fluid is grey dosnt smell burned just probably the same fluid GM put in 25 years ago. Im afraid to change it because alot of times the only things keeping these old transmissions unmaintained together is the sludge and grit in the old fluid lol. So being that i know its going to blow up at some point ide like to have a trans rebuilt and ready to go in when it happens. So again im in no hurry this is mainly just an effort to be prepared for the inevetable. If youve got more than one im kinda interested in pulling together possably 2 of the newer style transmissions as a back up for the back up lol.

Well like i said im in no rush right now doing alittle shopping and ill see the best deal i can get. If it comes down to payin $100 per core thats what it will be but so far ive gotten offers down as low as 50-75 havnt confirmed the year yet though.

 

i have a trans in a 92 rs not sure the condition but from the old owner told me he was parting the car just because of the engine went on him i'll take 100 as is no lower

 

Im assumeing its from a V8 RS? If its from the V6 I cant use it as the bellhouseing different but if its from a V8 ill concider it and get back to you. Thanks for your reply.

 

The one I've got in mind is in an 86. It's got a slip on the 2-3 shift at WOT. It's still installed and the car can be driven. ( tranny needs to be pulled ) I've got the newer version too, but that's what I plan to install in it's place.

$50 pick-up once it's pulled out and it's yours.


P.S. I need to keep the speedo sensor !

Hey guys quick newbie question, it might sound idiotic but nonetheless i have to ask. is there a 700r4 for a v6 and another for a v8? or are the 700r4's only for v8's ? and the v6's have a different name? thankx

 

There are both V6 AND V8 700R4's......

The bellhousing bolt pattern is different so it's pretty easy to see which one is made for a V6 and which one is a V8.


P.S. That tranny was pulled out of my IROC on Saturday and is available if your still looking for a core. I've also have an 88 + for $100 as is ( condition unknown - never drove the car I pulled it from. )

 

Well its an interesting situation. There are 700r4s for v6 motors and v8s. The 60 degree v6 has a version of the 700r4 that has a unique bellhouseing for that motor. Then theres the 90 degree v6 700r4 that uses the same bellhouseing as the v8 700r4. However the 7004r's bolted to the 90 degree v6 although will bolt to a v8 were different internally from the ones bolted to the v8s. How different they were im still reasurching but i know that the governor was different, they had less clutches, and a different torque converters at least. Though ive heard the internals "hard parts" were the same and a trans meant to be bolted to a 90 degree v6 can be rebuilt to be the same as the v8 version but again i haven't confirmed that yet.

I got one you can have it only has 10,000 miles on it since it was rebuilt I don't know what was wrong with it if was from an 86 if you want to give me fifty 30 bucks for it and get it out of my tent lol I live in MA

 

Well ill take in into consideration MA could be a bit of a drive for me but i thank you for your offer and will think it over.

 

Would you consider possibly making some kind of package deal for both the 86 and the 88+ one? I was really hoping to get 2 88+ transmissions but if its all the way in RI it might be worthwhile to just buy them both and be done with it.

$150 for a couple tranny's seems like a pretty good deal. To me; they are worth more for the small parts needed for my own repairs. The 86 has a 2-4 slip, the 88 (89?) is thought to be fully functional.

I have a v8 700R4 from an '87 305 TPI. Its in Providence, Rhode Island. Condition unknown, butthe last owner said it shifted well- before it sat for 3-4 years.

You can have it for the cost of two 30 racks of Coors Light and about 15 minutes under the car for removing the cross member bolts. Its easy, there is no engine in the car. Come get it this weekend.

 

I wish i could take you up on it but from where I am in CT it would be a 4-5 hour round trip and at like 10-15 MPGs on the camaro that's an expensive and time consuming proposition lol. Thanks for the offer though

Ill do 75 for my 89 700r4 that came out of my 60k mile firebird. However the servo bore is empty I believe or the corvette servo is sitting in there dont remember but the pin is definetely gone it went into my new tranny I built. BTW Im in Rocky Hill.

 

Sounds interesting to me. Depending on whats there I might be better off just getting one that's complete for 100 than searching around having to buy the parts to complete your servo but then again i do have 2 60 degree v6 700r4s and i might be able to borrow parts from them to complete your servo. Ill have to do a little research and get back to you on that. Being in Rocky Hill helps though that's not too far away. It is from a v-8 car correct?

 

Yea its a V8 model. Id bet the V6 pin is the same along with the servos.

 

Yea i figure it probably is. I dont see why it wouldn't be as even though the case is different i think the "hard parts" are the same. Again haven't had a chance to confirm weather or not this is true yet (apparently not a common question) but if it is ide be interested in taking you up on that offer. Just one other question just out of curiosity if its only got 60 k on it what happened to it to make you pull it out anyways? Not that it really matter as it will be rebuilt with many hard parts replaced with aftermarket upgrades anyways but im just curious what happened?

 

Nothing happened to it I originally just threw a corvette servo into it with a cheap stall but then I added a supercharger to my motor and bought a spare 700r4 that I built so I could swap them in and out in one day. I wouldve used my own except I wouldnt be able to move the car without the tranny in there while I was building it. BTW it comes with the cheap stall it was a brand new ebay cheapy forgot what dumb brand but Id take it out it was basically like stock .

BTW Ive got a NIB hi-energy 2-4 band and a Transgo 2&3 shift kit for sale if youre interested seeing as youre building it.

 

Im 95% sure pins and servos are the same an swappable theyre all sold for 700r4's I think the internals are the same.

 

Well i looked though my techtran manual on the later 700r4 and unfortunately it seems there were 3 different length pins used with either 1,2, or no grooves on it. Im not sure which one is in the transmissions i have but then again i don't know which one should have been in your trans with that servo you have either so it doesn't really matter. I concidered the possability of just useing the entire servo assemble from the v6 trans i have but unfortunately the v6 trans used a smaller servo so that wouldn't make scene. So really the only way for me to get it put together right would be to get a new servo with the pin but unfortunetly the servo kits seem to only include the servo itself and pin and you use the old springs and washers etc which i would still have to go track down. Long story short its going to end up costing me more in time and money to put that trans back together than to just buy one complete for $100. The shift kit i might be interested in though. I dont want to buy it yet as i dont even have a trans yet but what would you be looking to get for it?

 

Im looking for 50 on the shift kit.

As for the springs Im not sure if I have them Ill check tomorrow It should only be like 2 I think 1 large orange and a smaller one.

Im trying to work out my schedule in such a way that i could being that its a bit over an hour drive each way kinda hard to work it in lol.
