t-5 transmission bearings needed

so my car has been stuck in the shop for over a week now and they keep telling me the gears are fine in the t5 but the bearings all wore out (it was making a severe vibrating noise when not in gear or if i had my foot off the clutch)....

they keep saying they are having trouble finding these parts...

Anyone parting out an old T5 trans? I have an 87 IROC bone stock except for headers and exhaust.

eBay, dude. I got 2 T5 rebuild kits off of there. Trust me, the last thing you want in your trans is USED bearings..

Re: t-5 transmission bearings needed

yea the old ones are completely shot and i think it's because when I installed the new clutch kit, we noticed the trans mount was cracked when we pulled down the t5... so the damn thing was jiggling around probably and wearing the bearings. I replaced the whole clutch (disc, pressure plate, TO bearing) because of a vibrating sound that only went away when my foot was down on the clutch.... all signs pointed to a bad TO bearing. The TO bearing WAS bad but that wasn't the problem...

so now the whole trans is down and apart at another shop (i and even my best gearhead friends wasn't mess with a tranny rebuild....)

The shop is looking for brand new bearings but said GM discontinued them.... Thanks i'll check ebay

Re: t-5 transmission bearings needed

The basic, non-WC T5 kits generally are in the ballpark of $150... The WC ones are in excess of $200 due to their special parts. You may find one on there for cheaper (like I did the first time) due to someone having it sit on their shelf after selling their vehicle or shop, but I wouldn't count on it. Might want to mention to the seller you need it ASAP, but the shipping might cost you more. Also, I don't know how much of a stickler you are for it, but you may not end up with Timken bearings in the kit (a lot of T5s coming out of the factory used Timken bearings)... I know mine aren't, this time around.

thanks man... talked to the shop yesterday and they said they got the parts on the way. I can only hope they aren't going to try to charge me more than that for just the bearings. Maybe the had to buy the whole kit? I mean at this point maybe it'd be worth it to change everything out. Good thing is I know how much these kits cost now and I was able to look up some online so I won't let them rip me off, i'll update here and let you know what they ended up getting for me and how much they try to charge. all of this wait is making me think i should have just posted on here earlier and bought the kit and tried it myself.

Re: t-5 transmission bearings needed

Well, if they're going as far into it as to replace the output shaft bearing, they kind of NEED to replace the rings as the blocking ring for #1 is almost right behind the bearing (one snap ring and the #1 gear comes off and the ring is on the other side, obviously)... And you need to take the 5th gear completely off (and the ring with it) to get the countershaft out, along with pulling the input shaft off and leaving the #4 blocking ring on the gear to get at the bearings in the recess in the input shaft that support the nose of the output... Believe me, you can do this yourself with just a bearing puller set (it's how I did this latest one), but it's not easy to get the 3/4 synchro and the 5th drive gear off...

I appreciate the feedback man. I had it rebuilt by professionals; I am not ready to take on a project like that. Picking it up shortly when I return to Chicago from Vegas and I can't wait to drive the thing with the rebuilt tranny
