455 Pontiac Into a thirdgen.
I just got done searching the ARchives here. I've some questions.
It looked to me like Butler made a kit to drop into a thirdgen, then didn't, they sold the parts individually... Anyone know what the present deal is?
A few of the folks that did or were doing the swap i hadn't seen any recent info in there from on how it was going, or went.
A couple of hte links i tried following were bad, Anyone have Updated links to sites that are familiar with this swap.
And here's the meat and potato's of what i'm gonna be doing more than likely, what iv'e got and what i'm curious about.
The swap would be going into an 83 TA, as a pleasure cruiser type/weekend warrior, that me and my brother are gonna do.
I've got enough Pontiac blocks and heads around for 4 cars, I'll make one good one at least, got a few sets of 6x heads and one set from a 66-67 389 gto. Also have a th350 with teh bop patern.
anyone know of any motor mounts, some mention of modifying mounts from a 70 were made, beyond that, anybody making them off the shelf?
And one of the other big questions was Headers, whether or not they were being manufatured or not? radiator placement, and such mayb be questioins as well, but an aluminum rad and a pair of electric fans would prolly do the trick
Thanks

Sounds like my project... 400 Poncho in 87 Camaro. Goin slow do to slower income. Currently working on back halfing the thing. As for headers. Indian Adventures are making them for Pontiac block to 3rd gen. www.chiefmanyhorses.com last I heard they couldnt find donor car for test fit so they were gonna buy one. Round ports first, then D ports. I think they are making the mounts as well. watch what rear you have! That 455 is going to be a torque monster. Will grenade a week rear end. Their are some good Ford 9's and Chevy 12 bolts on the aftermarket (If you have a big bankroll). Of course you know you need sub frame connectors, I also have a new set of SSM lift bars and crossmember that I'm not using, goin ladders instead. Better beef up that 350 too. Thats what Im gonna run. GOOD LUCK!

Leave the 350 where it belongs, a flower pot. You can use the motor mounts, I think those are the ones you may need for the conversion. Look around for the second gen firebirds. They had a true pon motor in them and they handled them. And yes a 455 is a tq monster!! Good luck and tell us how it fits. I was thinking about doing the same thing. Have you thought about new heads?? 6x are the best if not close to it if I am not mistaken, but they are very heavy. Keep us posted please. A true 3rd gen pon!!
i read something similar in HOT ROD last year in one of the tech questions someone sent in. I remember him (steve magnate or HOT ROD) saying that there are a few companies that make them. If i can dig that issue out of the collection maybe i can take a look at what he said.
ok i recall more from the article. the reader was asking how to drop a 455 in a g-body(olds cuttlass, or cutty as we call 'em) and the steve dude told him to grab a kit for swapping a 455 into a third gen and modify it to his needs in the cutty. Hope this helps to reassure you that theres a kit out there somewhere.
