Motor Mounts for V8
I have an 83 camaro that came with a 2.8 V6. I am swapping to a 350 and I was told I need to change the motor mounts. I have a wrecked 87 Camaro that came with a 305. I need to get the motor mounts off it, but when I turn the bolts the nuts spin along with them. How do I get these off? Would I have to torch the bolts? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Thanks

Can't get to the nuts. It's not open underneath the crossmember.

Car: 89rs (previous 2.8)
Engine: 406
Transmission: 700r4 (for now)
if you use some extensions and swivels you can go in through the control arm to get at them...it sucks..plain and simple. just be patient and you will succeed. PS..new mounts run about 12.00. I would buy new in this area. keep a magnet handy.

The easiest way to get to the nuts is to drop the a-arms. Since the a-arms are loaded by the front springs, you will need some means to keep the spring compressed as you remove the bushing bolts (you won't have engine weight to do this, because the engine is out of the car, right?). You will need to put those V8 springs in your car anyway, so get a spring compression tool and kill two birds with one stone.
Think about it - if you torch the bolts, how are you going to attach the mounts in your car?

Well if I torched the bolts I could weld the mouunts to my car's crossmember. There are already welds where someone has had a V8 in it before.

Dropping the A-arm makes getting at the nuts much easier. You should also install the V8 springs as well. However if you just want to get the mounts out without doing that there are holes in the crossmember and if you hold a boxed end wrench just right you can get them on there. You can use an extension and swivel to get at the other ones. Make sure you have a good light. I have no idea why GM didn't use weld nuts but that's the way it is. Poly mounts are only $25 a piece if you want to go that way. Using a torch will ruin the mounts.

I have just replaced my mounts on my 1991 RS. The engine was out, but the suspension in. I didn't want to remove the A arms. So, I perservered with a 3/8" UJ (swivel in the US?), 2 extensions, 3/8" sockets and 1/2" drive air gun. It took 1 and a half hours, and lots of swearing, but it is possible. Oh, and a 15 mm ring spanner. All this with no help! Everybody seemed to disappear!
Just have a go! If you can't do it, you haven't lost anything!

Anyone ever welded them to the crossmember? Would the welds be strong enough?

Welding the nuts to the underside of the X-member would be a good idea! Never have any grief ever again!
By the way, can anybody recommend any good coil spring compressors for the front springs? Obviously must go inside the spring!
