Suggestions for a 383 Cam
Which hyd roller cam for my 383? (L98 eng)
It will have a ported LTR TPI, Sportsman II heads or something similiar, free flowing exh.
I'm wanting lots of low-mid range torque. (400+ lbs)
Don't plan on exceeding 5000-5500 rpms with it.
Stock to slightly noticeable idle.
Unfortunately I will probably have to pass smog checks within a couple of years :-(
So far I've found:
a stock cam from a 383 crate eng.
a stock cam from a LS-1.
a stock cam from a ZZ4 crate eng.
Any of these be any good?
Also looking at CompCams XR276HR.
Thx.

I still like the LPE 219 cam. I passed emmisions with it, it degreed right at 112, and ran like a champ. The idle on my SLP system sounded like stock, not lumpy if that's what your looking for.
You also can't beat the hot cam for the price.
There is a guy selling a comp cams 224-230 on the classifieds now, that would be a good deal at $150 also.
I don't think you can use the LS1 cam because of the bigger cam lobes?

I've got a 383 in my 84 T/A that I built using a Comp Cams 268H.
Slightly lumpy idle, great on pump gas. I chose the small duration cam because I've got a 10cc dish on the pistons.
Good Luck

Hey mr 8d4ta?? How much horse are you making,, what induction setup are you using, What heads are you using????
What times are your running???
Just curious because
I have a 383 short block, with 10cc dish pistons, and the 268h cam. I just got a set of 64cc vortecs, pocket ported and polished.
Now as soon as I get the vortec tpi base, Its drop in time. I already have the headers and all. Are you using 1.6 rockers??
Well just wanted to here more about how your car ran, and so on, so let me know thanks!!!!

I run the XR276HR-12, it doesnt exatly have a stock like idle, but it sounds damn good though! It likes to idle at ~800-850 RPMs and sounds real raspy.
