Crate Engine: New or Rebuilt?
Crate Engine: New or Rebuilt?
I am currently researching engine sources to replace my 184K mileage, 5.7 TPI 1987 GTA Trans Am. My engine has roller lifters and center line bolt on valve covers. I have called a few engine rebuild companies who claim they offer 3 to 7 year warrenties. I called GM and they said this engine is no longer available to purchase new. Is this true? If not, can someone please recommend where to buy a new engine or recommend a good source to buy a rebuilt engine.
Thanks,

Go to this link. The L98 could still be had, I think.

goautocenter.com has a 300HP TPI 350 crate.
Comes with a Crane Compucam,Hydraulic roller lifters, TPI heads and a Caprice Short Block with PM Rods.
All new GM parts with warrantee.
$1855 when I got mine last year (plus shipping)
A little more now. ($1955 now)
Been very happy with it. I've put 13,000 miles on mine since January, and it has no problem out-powering 4.6L Cobras.

The full L98 longblock is no longer available. You could get the shortblock and rebuild your heads, though.
SDPC does offer this as an alternative http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?act...d=128&pid=105.
