Extra supports, where do they go?
Extra supports, where do they go?
I just did a motor swap from an L98 block to a late model small block with vortec heads. Everything turned out ok, well almost, but now its ok..I think. Anyway, I found that about 4 or 5 of these support things(sticks, poles, brackets) did not fit on the new motor, or I just couldn't find where they go. One was for the alternator to the intake, but it is to long for my new intake. The others are for other parts like the air pump and power steering pump. I heard they provide belt tension? I was wondering if they are really needed, because it would be a b**ch to make them all fit and find their place. Seems like the car runs fine without them. Any info will be appreciated.

I just did a similar swap. I used the 8.5" rod on the left side from the alt. to the first bolt of the exhaust manifolds(if you're using headers reuse the old stud). The long 11" rod with a tight dog-leg at the end went from the A/C pump the the third exhaust bolt in on the right side(with headers I had to elongate the staight hole and grind down the rounded end to clear the header pipe).
Does the engine work ok? Then the proper spot for them is in the steel recycling bin. A sign of a good engineer is that he can make something work with less parts.
j/k A lot of those won't go back on because of the smog pump missing and not havnig the exh. mans like the admiral said. Soon might be a good time to do the serp switch if you can find a good donor. You have to take all the acc. with the brackets, including water pump.
