Overhall engine
Overhall engine
I was thinking of having my engine overhalled in my '92 Camaro. It has a stock 305. Any suggestions on what type of parts I should purchase and have installed? Tips on beefing up the power?

How much, if any, of this work do you plan on doing yourself?
Is there something wrong with your 305 (worn out?), or do you just want more power? If it isn't worn out, then more power is available in emissions-legal form. Exhaust is Step #1. My sig contains more.
But, if the engine is worn out, then don't spend money rebuilding the 305. Get yourself a 350 and work it over instead. You'll get the performance increase you're looking for, and still get through emissions as long as you don't volunteer that it isn't a 305 anymore (they look the same from the outside).
BTW, do you have TBI or TPI on your engine currently?

I actually have over 200k on the engine right now. Runs a little rough, but it could be due to the exhaust leak. I just want the car to go another 200K. I have a TBI. If I did get a 350, would I have to change everything else? I would like to do as much of the work myself. My uncle does this type of work on the side and offered his assistance. But, as far as upgrading and making a more powerful engine, he has limited information on the Camaro.

Your next stop should be on the TBI forum. They can answer questions about making it work with a 350 under it, what kind of cam to run, etc.
thanks
Thanks for the tips. Sounds like you really re-worked yours over good. I just feel that these Camaros will be worth some money, provided that they are well kept and maintained. Thanks again.
Five7Kid knows what he's talking about.
With that amount of mileage on an old 305, it's not worth rebuilding only to get the same amount of power.
IMHO, I suggest getting a decent crate motor, or looking for a used 350 and dropping it in or rebuilding it first.
That is, unless of course you are tight with money right now.. in which case there are some shops that will merely replace your enigne bearings.. so long as you deliver the motor TO them.. they usually charge around $400 bucks to change all the bearings. This won't require any re-working of your motor.
Chances are though... your "running rough" symptoms are either from a worn cam, poorly tuned engine (IE: bad plugs, wires, clogged fuel injectors, etc..), or from massive carbon deposits in your intake, / heads / valves.
