New Crate Engine in 92 Z28
New Crate Engine in 92 Z28
Hello, I'm new here and I did use the search feature for help and did find some good info. I have the chance to buy a 92 Z28 with 40,000 miles on it for $6,200 unmodified and in great condition. I'd like to swap the V8 out and add a new one to get about 350HP at the crank or wheels. I like the ZZ4 engine from GM however all I see is that it should be used on pre 1973 vehicles. Is this true? We dont have emissions testing here just at inspection they check for the cat converter. Can I still do the swap? What extra items do I need to purchase for the ZZ4 to run ie carb, plugs etc? Also, does the transmission need to be swapped or modified to work with the ZZ4? I have about $7,000 to spend on the engine and trans but do not want to go custom as I would like to keep this simple. Thanks.

The trans should bolt up, unless you have a t-5 in the car you want to buy. Then you would just have to swap out the auto parts for the manual parts, the zz4s come with flex plates for autos. The crate motor comes pretty much ready to go. Al i would get is new plugs, carb, cleaner, fuel pump, lines, and some other things as i went along. Headders too, new motor mounts, you get the idea. About the emmissions, you should be ok since you have no smog regulations! lucky bastard! If the cars has a carb on it they sell a conversion kit for the zz4 so that it would be legal. i am sure others will help you since i haven't really covered everything. good luck

With the stock engine sounding like it is in good shape go with a SC/headers/upgraded intake components/TC/shift kit/and suspension you'll get your power you're seeking with no problem...
