It came out of a Chevrolet.
509 is the most common 2-bolt 400 casting. It ran from at least 72 to whenever they quit making them. Mine is a 73 model of that casting. There is a series of numbers near the casting #, that might look something like 14E3; this example would indicate the 14th day of the e-th (5th, May) month in a year ending in 4, probably 74 if it's a 400; a block with that number would have most likely been installed in an early 75 production vehicle.
The block does not care what kind of sheet metal the factory wrapped it in, or really, when it was wrapped, beyond just curiosity. If it's just the block, the casting # tells you all you really need to know. If you have the heads that came on it (probably 882 casting), please have them destroyed immediately, in order to protect the world from castings that will limit a 400-CID engine to 180 HP.
What info are you looking for?

Are you sure it's not 468462? Go to www.mortec.com and they have a listing of head casting #'s.
