Switcheroo possible?
Switcheroo possible?
Hey guys & gals...
I am considering swapping motors in my 3rd gen and '65 Chev truck. The truck has a 327/4 spd and my 84Z has a 305/5 spd. I have never removed/installed a motor and from what I understand there may be some issues with this swap.
So here's my questions:
- Will each vehicle have to retain it's original flywheel due to the small T5 bellhousing and will they bolt up? Also, is the 327 flywheel specially balanced to the engine or is every flywheel the same (besides tooth count)?
- If I have to switch flywheels then I'll also switch starter motors but will have to tap the 327 block for an extra mounting hole?
- Any problems with the short/long water pump difference?
- Anything you can think of that might be a problem?
Thanks!

Flywheels will exchange. Use the one in the vehicle it originally came in.
No problem with block accessory mount holes. However, pre-'68 heads do not have required accessory mount holes on the ends, and there isn't enough material to drill and tap.
Other than that, it's a long-block exchange.

Right on! That's what I wanted to hear. I was planning on swapping those crappy low compression heads anyway. Some dude has a set of vortec heads for $400 that I'm hoping to snap up. On that note... can anyone recommend a good vortec intake? I was thinking of getting one from GM or edelbrock but they are both a little pricey - that doesn't matter if they perform well though.

To use the Vortecs, you'll need self-aligning rocker arms and center-bolt valve covers.
