Buick 455

I have a question for you Big Block swappers. I have come across a 455 Buick from a neighbor for $1000 It came out of his show car he wrecked and he just wanted to get rid of it(he wrecked a 70 Buick GS) Anyway, I was thinking about shoehorning this Big Buford into my 91 Z instead of going with the 383 I planned on, since the 455 makes a "LITTLE" more torque. I know headers arent an option, but was wondering if this may be possible?? I put a 9in moser rear in my car to support the 383, but will it support the 455? He dynoed the car last year, and it had in the neigborhood of 354hp@5400rpm and 428lb ft @3600 at the wheels...... I read an article a while back about a guy putting a 455 into a 86 trans am, and only had to change the oil filter assembly to a buick V6 to make it fit......Am I being crazy or would this not be cool?????? I think it would def. be different. Comments? Suggestions???

A Moser 9-inch would easily handle a 455. The B-O-P big block swap comes up quite often on this forum. A simple search would answer all your questions. Here's some recent links. Happy reading!

The swap would be different and cool, but more than likely expensive. I'd stay with the 383 plan. The 383 has more than enough torque to accelerate a third-gen.

Hey thanks for the help. Well, I bought the motor yesterday and already had offers from about 4 or 5 neighbors to help me put it in....(we're all gearheads around here) I got my rear end put in tonite along with the BMR track link kit. I was curious though how much heavier the Buick motor is compared to my 350. The Buick has Alum. heads so I think it shouldnt be TOO much more. Im gonna start putting it in tomorrow, and hopefully with alot of cussing and "refreshments", we can complete it sometime next month since we all work alot. It comes in handy that Im a Fabricator.... I will def. have some pics after the swap, and Im def gonna go to the Bristol Bash next year. Wish me luck....hehe

If I'm not mistaken, your tranny won't bolt up to the BOP blocks.

Yeah, I figured that out the hard way Fortunately, TransAdapt makes an adapter for the Chevy trans to bolt up to the BOP blocks. The engine and tranny are in the car now, and other than some grinding on the driver's side header, everything went in. I had to use a shorter oil filter though, from a Buick 3.8. Im looking now for a aftermarket serpentine setup, since IM not too crazy about v-belts.... I cant wait to get this Big Buford going. It sounds AWESOME!!

Buick 455s are pretty lightweight, just changing to an aluminum intake should get it down to about the same weight as a SBC. If it has aluminum heads, it will be lighter than your stock engine. BTW, for a good running 455 with aluminum heads, you got a steal!!!
