is this a good cam?

i was just lookin thru my new jegs catalog and was lookin at the Crane Cams Powermax camshafts. i was lookin for a street able one but also good for the track. i was lookin at this cam from them. its the 272-2 camshaft and it has Adv. duration is .272*/284* and gross lift is 454''/.480'' its good for 1500 rpms to 5800 rpms. they say its a Trong low & mid range torque, daily driving, good idle, rpm range from 1500-5800, 8.7-10.7:1 comp. ratio. and this cam kit is for 149.99

the other one i was lookin at was the 278-2 camshaft and it has a 278*/290* adv. duration 467''/ .494'' gross lift and the rpm range is from 2000-6200 and the discription they give me is it has strong midrange torque, street and mild bracket, good idle, rpm range from 2000-6200, 9.5-10.7:1 comp. ratio and this cam is not a kit , so i would have to buy new lifters and ill get new pushrods and lifters also and this cam is 109.99

but with the second cam should i also get new valve springs or are the ones i have good?

is the second cam a good choice, they also say to get a 2500 stall converter too. which brand of converters are good? becuz if i get the second cam ill get the converter also and have this one guy put it all in. and he works on drag cars, from like 16 like mine up to 7 second cars so i think ill pay for him to put that stuff in.

what do u guys think, i need all advise on this one , thanx

Can you give us the duration at .050" instead of the advertised duration?

THose are fairly big cams for a 305.

My 350 has a smaller cam.

I have a Comp cam Extreme Energy 262 Hydraulic Flat tappet.

It's 262/270 lobe with 218/224 @ .050
Total lift is 462 469 with 1.5 rockers
rpm range is 1300 to 5600

I'm making around 300 hp and 375 lbs of torque.
I have a 3.08 rear with a .62 overdrive. I'm at 1500 rpm @ 60
I needed a low rpm cam to make lots of torque to keep it moving at the low rpms.
If you are at the same rpm range at 60 mph and you don't change you're rear gearing you won't be able to move the car well on the highway or the drag strip. Either go to a smaller cam or get better gearing. 16 at 83 mph is pathetic. You probably have a 2.73 or less. With gearing like that and the bigger cam and engine you will burn the transmission cause of all the heat made by the slippage to get rolling.

well ive decided on the XE262 cam, after postin a few other questions around and that cam sounds like a good cam to use in a 305. i know i would need a higher stall converter and if my gears are good i dont have to swap rears. but i have a 9 bolt posi disk rear sittin in my garage just waint till i get my rear suspention parts to swap the rears. nd the 9 bolt has 2.77 gears in it.
